High School Athletic Code
“Questions and Answers”
1. What grades do I need to maintain academic eligibility?
- Students need to have passed all subjects in the previous semester. If they fail one or more classes, the student is placed on probation for a period of five (5) weeks beginning the first day of practice. While on probation, students may practice but may not play in games, travel with the team, sit on the bench or act as managers. During winter season grades for the previous semester will be checked and probation may begin during the season. No-Credit--“NC” grades will be considered failing.
- All incompletes must be made up within the first five (5) weeks of the succeeding semester. Students receiving an incomplete will be placed on academic probation until the incomplete is cleared for a passing grade.
- Grade checks will be done every six weeks. At the six week check, if a student is failing a class the athletic director will speak with the subject area teacher to determine the reason for the failing grade followed by a meeting with the student and a call to the parents to remind them of the consequences of failing a class and the available resources to help them pass. If at eight weeks a failing grade is confirmed the student will be placed on academic probation until a passing grade is confirmed.
2. What happens if I violate school rules?
- Student athletes must obey all school and school district rules stated in both the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook and the Athletic Code. If rules are violated disciplinary action, including possible suspension from the team will be imposed.
- The High School Athletic Code is in effect: (1) throughout the school year from the first day of turn out for a sport or activity through the remainder of the calendar year until the participants first turn out of the succeeding year--exclusive of summer break, (2) at school or at any school sponsored program/event even those occurring during breaks in the school year, and (3) at any program/event at which students are representing their school or the District regardless of when the event occurs and regardless of sponsorship.
- All violations during the time of high school eligibility are considered when determining appropriate disciplinary action.
3. What happens if I use tobacco products?
- The first violation will result in a 10-day suspension from the team. If the student enrolls in a tobacco education class and continues participation in the class, the suspension may be reduced to five (5) days.
- The second violation results in suspension for the remainder of the season. Enrolling in a tobacco education or cessation class will not reduce this suspension.
- The third violation results in suspension from all participation for one (1) calendar year. Enrollment in a tobacco education or cessation class will not reduce this suspension.
- All violations during the time of high school eligibility are considered cumulative—they do not start over each year.
4. What happens if I use alcohol or drugs?
- If students are found in possession, under the influence or participating in the sale/transfer of alcohol or other drugs on school grounds, or at school events, the appropriate discipline action as stated in the Student Handbook and Students Rights and Responsibility Handbook will be taken. In addition, student athletes will be disciplined in accordance with WIAA rules and regulations and those adopted by the Olympia School District as written in the Athletic Code.
- For the first violation of the rules, students are suspended from the team for the rest of the season. The student may apply for reinstatement during the current season or future seasons based, in part, on completion of a formal/approved alcohol/other drug assessment and completion of any recommendations made as a result of the assessment.
- For a student’s second violation of the rules, they are suspended from athletic participation for a calendar year. A student may apply for reinstatement after 1 calendar year.
- For a third violation, students are suspended from athletic participation for the remainder of high school eligibility. Students may not apply for reinstatement.
- Violations of the alcohol and other drug rules are cumulative from 7th grade through 12th grade (violations occurring during middle school transfer to high school).
5. What happens if I am at a party where alcohol or other drugs are used—or I use them?
- Students should immediately leave a party where alcohol and other drugs are illegally used. If they stay at the party, one (1) game suspension from will be imposed.
- If they use alcohol or other drugs, the appropriate level of discipline listed previously will be imposed.
6. Can I appeal academic and/or disciplinary probation/ineligibility?
- Yes. Students who are declared ineligible or in violation of WIAA/ OSD rules and regulations may appeal.
7. How do I appeal?
- To begin the appeal process, students or their parents must first meet with the school athletic director to review the violation and appeal process.
- For academic appeals-- These appeals are filed with the building Athletic committee. The building Athletic Committee will hear the appeal within 3 days of receiving a written request. Appeals of the building decision may be filed with the District Athletic Committee within 3 days of the decision of the building committee.
- For disciplinary appeals-- These appeals are filed directly with the District Athletic Committee and must be done within three (3) days of notification of the disciplinary action.
- If the student/parent’s appeal is denied at the building level or district level, they may file an appeal to the OSD School Board or WIAA, as appropriate.
8. If I have additional questions or concerns who should I speak with?
- The building athletic director can answer any questions you might have.
- In addition, you may contact Jeff Carpenter, District Coordinator for Health, Fitness and Athletic Programs at 596-8544.
- You may also contact WIAA at 425-687-8585.
