Vacation Shutdown Checklists
When school is out, save resources and energy. Use these checklists to properly close down vacant classrooms, offices and workspaces before your vacation.
Monitor the Waste at Your School
Solid waste hauling needs can change over time. Changes in student population, school activities or recycling programs change garbage generation. Some schools may be able to reduce their dumpster size or number of weekely pick-ups. This can save money. Monitoring the garbage and recycling containers for a month can give you great information about the current hauling status. Work with your custodian to track garbage and recycling levels at the time of pick up with this visual tracking sheet. Then call the Resource Conservation Manager (596-8566) to discuss possible changes to reduce your school's utility expenses.
Free Lids for Milk and Juice Carton Recycling
Plastic lids with a cut hole and labeling help make recycling milk and juice carton recycling easier for students and reduces garbage in the recycling. There are a limited number of lids available on a first come basis to any OSD school. The lids fit 32-gallon cans. Contact the Resource Conservation Manager at 596-8566 for a lid.
Spread the Word at Every Switch
Friendly stickers at light switches help remind staff and students to switch off equipment when not in use. Puget Sound Energy's Energy Efficiency Reminder Labels and templates are available for OSD facilities. Click here to see label samples and how to calculate your site's plug load.
