What is the Student Mentor Program?
The Student Mentor Program (SMP) is a student-centered initiative focused on leadership, peer mentoring, and identity exploration. Rooted in equity, the program supports underrepresented students while inviting all students to participate meaningfully.
-
Mission: To empower students through mentoring, connection, and leadership development.
-
Vision: A district-wide culture of belonging, confidence, and student-led support.
A Brief History: Launched in February 2021, the program was created to support Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and underrepresented students by fostering safe spaces for social-emotional growth and mentorship across grade levels. Building on existing student groups already established in the district, the program has strengthened these efforts by bringing together existing groups and building on their strengths, creating new pathways for students to connect, lead and thrive. What began as a small initiative has since grown into a district-wide program that expands opportunities for all students, strengthens connections across schools and highlights the power of peer support.
Program Structure Includes:
-
Peer mentoring across high school, middle, and elementary levels
-
Student-led affinity-based clubs
-
Leadership development through the Student Mentor Leadership Team
-
Events, workshops, and celebrations that build confidence and community
Program Elements
The three C’s—Community, Connection, and Confidence—are the pillars that define and drive the program’s core values.
Affinity Groups through Associated Student Body Clubs
Affinity groups bring students together around shared identities, backgrounds, or cultural heritage, while remaining open and welcoming to all students who wish to participate or learn as respectful allies.
Student Mentor Leadership Team
The Student Mentor Leadership Team is made up of dedicated high school and middle school students who serve as leaders and role models within the Student Mentor Program. These student leaders help plan and facilitate mentoring activities, support affinity-based clubs, and guide initiatives that promote belonging, leadership, and cultural empowerment across schools.
Collegiate Student Athlete Partnership
Partnerships with collegiate student-athletes inspire K-12 students by highlighting perseverance, teamwork, and leadership. Athletes share their stories and provide mentorship through workshops and events.
